Who this is for
Truck and Jeep owners buying a first winch who want to know what the price gap between WARN and Smittybilt gets them, and what else to budget for.
Sizing rule
Take your loaded vehicle weight and multiply by 1.5. That's the minimum rated pull. A built Wrangler or mid-size truck usually lands around 9,500 to 10,000 lb. A half-ton with gear often wants 12,000 lb.
WARN VR EVO
The VR EVO 10-S and VR EVO 12-S are WARN's mid-line winches with synthetic rope. WARN is the name most shops know, parts and remotes are easy to find, and the price shows it.
Smittybilt XRC
The XRC Gen2 9.5K with steel cable is one of the cheapest name-brand winches around. The XRC Gen3 9.5K Comp swaps in synthetic rope and an aluminum fairlead. You save real money over WARN; the trade-off is a shorter warranty and more owners reporting they had to service a solenoid or remote over time.
Steel cable or synthetic rope
Steel is cheap, takes abuse on rocks, and is heavy. It can store a lot of energy if it snaps. Synthetic rope is light, floats, and is easier on your hands, but it wears faster from heat and sharp edges. Steel needs a roller fairlead; rope needs a smooth hawse fairlead.
What else you need
A winch doesn't bolt to a stock bumper. You need a winch plate or a winch-ready bumper made for your vehicle, like the Smittybilt XRC Gen1 bumper for the JL. You also need heavy battery cables (usually in the box), a snatch block and shackles. Our recovery gear basics covers the rest. Browse all universal parts and all vehicles.

Gotchas
- Rated pull is on the first wrap; pull drops as the drum fills.
- Match the fairlead to the line type.
- Budget for a winch plate or bumper.
- Keep people clear of the line and use a damper on steel cable.
- Never hook back to the winch line itself; use a snatch block.

FAQ
Does Octarak sell winches?
No. We don't make or sell parts. We link to the store.
Will a 9,500 lb winch work on a half-ton?
It can, but 10,000 to 12,000 lb gives you more margin on a heavy truck.
