Who this is for
Anyone heading off pavement who wants a basic recovery kit and wants to know what each piece does before buying it.
Start With Recovery Points
Gear is only as good as what you hook it to. You need a rated recovery point on the front and rear. That can be factory tow hooks, bumper shackle mounts, or a shackle mount in the hitch receiver.
Never hook a strap or rope to a tow ball. Balls are not made for that kind of load, and if one snaps off it comes back like a bullet. Tie-down loops and suspension parts are not recovery points either.
Rope or Strap
A kinetic rope stretches. When the pulling vehicle takes off, the rope stores energy and then pulls the stuck vehicle out more smoothly than a hard yank. A plain tow strap does not stretch much and is better for a slow, steady tow.
Size the rope to the vehicle. A common rule is a rope rated for two to three times the weight of the heavier vehicle. Check the rating on the listing, not just the diameter.
The Nilight kinetic rope is 1 inch by 30 feet and comes with two soft shackles. It is a Budget Pick.
Shackles
Shackles connect the rope or strap to the recovery point. Steel D-ring shackles are cheap and tough. Soft shackles are rope loops that are lighter and do not fly as hard if something lets go.
The Nilight 3/4 inch D-ring shackles have a 7/8 inch screw pin and come as a pair (Budget Pick). Screw the pin all the way in, then back it off a quarter turn so it does not bind under load.
Hitch Receiver Mount
If you have a 2 inch receiver, a shackle mount turns it into a solid rear recovery point. The Nilight 2 inch shackle hitch receiver comes with a 3/4 inch D-ring (Budget Pick). Use your hitch pin to hold it in.
Snatch Block
This one is for winch owners. A snatch block is a pulley. Run the winch line out to the block, anchor the block, and run the line back to your vehicle, and you about double the pulling force. It also lets you pull at an angle. The Nilight snatch block is listed at 10 tons (Budget Pick).
Safe Pulls
Keep everyone well back from the line, at least one and a half times its length. Lay a damper, a heavy jacket or a bag, over the middle of the rope or winch line. Pull straight when you can, start slow, and talk it over with the other driver before anyone moves.
Also carry a shovel, gloves and traction boards if you can. A lot of stuck vehicles come out with a little digging and no pull at all.

FAQ
Kinetic rope or snatch strap?
Both stretch. Ropes usually stretch more and are easier to store. Either one beats a plain tow strap for getting unstuck.
Can I use a tow strap with hooks?
Avoid metal hooks on the ends. They can come loose and fly. Use loops and shackles.
