Who this is for
JK and JL owners adding protection, recovery points or a winch, and deciding between a narrow stubby bumper and a wider, fuller-coverage design.
Why choose an aftermarket bumper
A steel bumper adds protection, recovery points, a place to mount a winch and lights, and often better approach clearance. It also adds weight. This guide is built from manufacturer specs and published fitment, not from hands-on testing. We have not installed or driven these parts.
Stubby or full width
A stubby bumper is only a little wider than the frame, so it keeps clearance for large tires and improves approach angle. ARB says tires larger than 37 inches can rub the wings of a traditional wide bumper, and its Stubby is designed to avoid that. Examples include the ARB Stubby (JL), the Poison Spyder Crawler (JL) and the DV8 FS-15 (JL).
A full-width bumper covers more of the front end and fenders, with more room for lights, but it is heavier and may rub bigger tires. The Smittybilt XRC Gen 1 (JL), the Rugged Ridge Arcus (JK) and the Fab Fours Lifestyle (JK) are examples.
What to check before you buy
- Winch. Check the winch rating and which winch brands fit. Fab Fours, for example, says its JK bumper supports winches up to 10,000 pounds and is not compatible with WARN Power Plant or Zeon winches.
- Vacuum pump on 2012-2018 JKs. Rugged Ridge and Fab Fours both note that some winches require relocating the factory vacuum pump on these years.
- Sensors and lights. DV8 says its FS-15 does not support factory sensors but works with factory 4-inch fog lights. Check yours.
- Fitment by year. Some makers publish fitment through a certain model year only. ARB and Poison Spyder tables we read ended at 2024, so confirm newer years.
- Weight. A heavy bumper plus a winch can make a stock spring sag. See our JL lift kit guide on choosing springs for the load.
Materials and finish
Most Wrangler bumpers are steel. Steel is tough and heavy. Plate thickness varies: Poison Spyder says its Crawler is 3/16-inch plate and ARB says its Stubby is 4 mm. A thicker plate is not automatically better; design, welds and gusseting matter too. Finish options include textured black powder coat and heavy-duty armor coatings.

FAQ
Do I need a winch bumper?
Only if you plan to mount a winch. Many people choose a steel bumper for protection and recovery points alone.
Will a steel bumper hurt my ride?
It adds weight at the front axle, so stock springs may sag. Some owners choose stiffer springs or a lift kit rated for the load.
Do these bumpers need drilling?
Makers describe the ones listed here as bolt-on. Confirm in the instructions for your model year.
