Who this is for
Wrangler owners deciding whether 33s are enough or whether to step up to 35s, and what else that step involves.
The short answer
Thirty-three-inch tires are the most common upsize and are often the easiest step. Thirty-five-inch tires are a bigger commitment: more lift, the right wheels, and in many cases new gears. This guide is built from manufacturer specs and published fitment, not from hands-on testing. We have not installed or driven these parts.
Tire sizes are nominal
A "33" or "35" is a rounded name. Real measurements vary. For example, the LT285/70R17 size is listed around 32.8 to 33.0 inches overall, while the Nitto Ridge Grappler 35x12.50R17 is listed at about 34.76 inches. Two tires with the same label can differ by half an inch or more, so use the maker's measured diameter when you plan clearance.
What 33s usually need
Jeep fits an LT285/70R17 (33-inch) tire from the factory on some JL Rubicons, according to BFGoodrich's vehicle listings. On other trims, and on most JKs, 33s may need a small lift, trimming, or both. A moderate lift kit or leveling is a common pairing.
What 35s usually need
- More lift. TeraFlex lists a 35-inch maximum for its 2.5-inch Trail Select kits on both the JL and JK. See our JL lift kit guide.
- Wheels. Check backspacing and tire width against the wheel. See wheel fitment basics.
- Gearing. Taller tires act like a taller final gear ratio, so many owners re-gear for 35s. Ask a shop what suits your engine and transmission.
- Speedometer and drivetrain. Recalibrate the speedometer. Heavier, larger tires stress axles, brakes and steering parts.
- Spare tire and carrier. A 35-inch spare is large and heavy. Check your tailgate and carrier.
- Bumpers and fenders. Larger tires can rub wide bumpers. ARB says tires above 37 inches can rub the wings of a traditional wide bumper.
How to decide
If you mostly drive on-road and on moderate trails, 33s plus a small lift are often enough. If you want the look and clearance of 35s, plan the whole package first: lift, wheels, gears, and spare. Pricing the full package, not just the tires, avoids surprises.
33-inch vs 35-inch at a glance
| 33-inch (e.g. LT285/70R17) | 35-inch (e.g. 35x12.50R17) | |
|---|---|---|
| Measured diameter (examples) | About 32.8-33.0 in | About 34.8 in (Nitto Ridge Grappler) |
| Lift | Often small lift or leveling; some Rubicons run them stock | Commonly a 2.5 in or taller lift kit with matching wheels |
| Wheels | Wide range of 17-inch wheels | Check backspacing and width carefully |
| Gearing | Often fine; some owners re-gear | Many owners re-gear |
| Spare tire | Typically simpler | Larger and heavier; check carrier |

Gotchas
- Tire "size" is nominal. Use the maker's measured diameter.
- Taller tires change speedometer readings and can strain the drivetrain.
- A 35-inch spare is large and heavy.
- Check backspacing and tire width, not just diameter.

FAQ
Can I run 35s with a 2.5 inch lift?
TeraFlex lists 35 inches as the maximum tire for its 2.5-inch Trail Select kits, with the right wheels. Results depend on your wheels, trim and trimming. Check the kit page.
Do I have to re-gear?
Not by law, but many owners do with 35s because taller tires change the effective ratio. Ask a shop about your engine and transmission.
Do 35s hurt fuel economy?
Larger, heavier tires typically reduce fuel economy. How much depends on the tire and how you drive.
